Black Squirrel Farms
Stop by the Farm Stand, Explore the Site or Take a Guided Tour
Located in the heart of NY Finger Lakes wine country and at the intersection of history, conservation and agriculture, Black Squirrel Farms is leading the regional rediscovery of black walnuts, New York’s native walnut. Wild-grown black walnuts are very different from the walnuts typically found in a grocery store, with a much bolder taste and more fruity and musty flavor. They can be used as a snack nut or baking nut. Like other foraged foods, while they can’t be labeled organic, they are in practice.
Stop by the farm stand to pick up some black walnuts and black walnut products. Explore the site to see how we’re developing a nut tree dominated landscape which supports rich and complex communities of plants and animals while providing education and recreation opportunities for people. Take a guided tour where friendly, knowledgeable guides will step you through the past, present and possible future of an iconic native species and heritage food and demonstrate how Black Squirrel Farms is helping area growers get hand-collected black walnuts from local trees to regional tables.
Guided tours are outdoors and include a chance to crack, taste and maple-glaze your own black walnuts. This truly unique farm experience is available nowhere else.
